TestingWhy do I test my blood sugar?

The goal of diabetes treatment is to keep your blood sugar (glucose) in a healthy range, not too high and not too low. Testing with a blood glucose meter provides an immediate blood sugar reading.

The American Association for Clinical Endocrinologists recommends the following targets for blood sugar:

  • Fasting Glucose: < 110 mg/dL
  • 2 Hour Postprandial (after you eat): <140 mg/dL

Since everyone is different, always be sure to work with your doctor and health care team to find out how frequently you should check your blood sugar and what your target range is for your blood sugar results.
